Hanna Kanto (b.1981, Finland) studied art at the University of Lapland, where she graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 2007. Since then, she has mostly been living and working as an artist in the northern parts of Sweden and Finland.
Kanto’s research is based on the interactions of the North and her artistic work. She opens up to the Nordic aspect through her participation in everyday life; livelihoods are a part of her work. Life in the North also clearly illustrates the conflicts between modern life style and old traditions.
Her latest project is based on nature scientific research in Enontekiö, the northest part of Finnish Lapland. She is co-operating with scientist from the group called BioGeoClimate Modelling Lab which is focused on the spatial and temporal modelling of Earth systems, particularly patterns and processes concerning biogeography, geomorphology, and climatology and their interactions. She uses the researching material and results as a base of her artistic work. In Kantos’ art practice, scientific results get visual characters where the documentary and fiction are mixed. Her work includes painting and building installations.
